2月27日 Amusing vacation stories ....So 2 weeks goes by fast ...
I went to Hong Kong and got my visa blocked on shopping spree ... Not my entry visa but my visa card !
Hong Kong is a mecca shopping capital of the world. Its insane. You really get the sense of globalization of the world just walking down the street. The world has drastically changed in the last ten years.
I'm cheapass so I always take the cheapest public transportation possible from any airport. I arrive and have no idea what to do but see this white airline pilot buy a train ticket so I follow him. When in Hong Kong, follow a tourist who seems to be prepared.
In HK, I got confused a couple of times taking the "subway" .. they have these subway signs but its not a real subway but just an underground walking tunnel. uck me. I got ucked over two times in the span of 45 minutes. It must of been the jetlag. I knew the subway was called the MTR but seeing a sign saying subway and having a walkway underground tricked me two times too many.
Shanghai is like what Hong Kong was 15-20 years ago.. when you visit, you can just see the potential. 30 million people, good infrastructure and a port city. The hype of this area emerging isn't hype or hyperbole, its real.
Questions for your blog?
Can I wear my high school uniform to former high school friend weddings? Its sounds good in theory, but you just can't especially if you know the bride but if its the groom you know, roll the dice.
What's the best toothbrush out there? Sonicare .. I was p*ssed for the last couple of months b/c I had a Sonicare circa 2005 and they stopped making the old toothbrush heads ! uck me! Imagine getting a $150 toothbrush and they stop making the heads ! Ridiculous. Costco doesn't sell the old Sonicare ones only their new elite models. Finally they came out with new Elite brushes that fit the old models too. The brush heads are still too expensive.
When is your blog's house warming party? Next weekend. Book it off. Canada CustomsSo my blog is back, jetlagged, drained but here for your comfort. 13 hours in the air, arrive in Toronto at 3am Shanghai time and went through Immigration for a couple of hours and then another hour of customs searching.
Immigration gives you a free Welcome to Canada daytimer and bag when you immigrate to Canada. Welcome.
I have never got searched at customs before but technically you are suppose to bring a list of all your belongings and list of of belongings that you are bringing in a later date when you immigrate.
Blog's mom wanted to write a list of goods to be brought in later (ex. to be exempt for duty) . Unfortunately this list was quite elaborate. So we actually didn't have to go through "customs" as we were let go but b/c we had to get this list to be brought at a later date signed, we had to go through customs..
At customs, you have all these inspectors searching through every one's bags and seizing goods and paying duties. Funny, when we were waiting in line all of these happened. My blog was scared. It was like an action movie.
Plot - my blog's to be brought list item first item was a Patek Phillipe watch for Mrs. Blog. The value was significant enough, the inspector thought we were bringing in 24 watches b/c the series was called "24". After this, I knew it was going to be a very interesting customs search.
Second plot line was that blog had brought also a new watch, wedding bands and wedding favours. Reading customs literature beforehand is open to interpretation as new immigrants goods are tax exempt as long as they are used. Unfortunately they even used to the term "maybe" which added to the frustation.
Blog certainly didn't want these items siezed or to pay duty on. The whole purpose of acquiring these products was the price inequality in Canada vs abroad.
Blog almost pee'd his pants when the inspector asked what type of watch that is while inspecting it.
Ironically, all the "wedding favours" which was a 120 pound logistic nuisance was packed in giant CHINESE TOBACCO cardboard boxes ! and this was the least on my worries.
but it all ended well after 20 or so hours and we have a new immigrant to Canada. Shanghai city reviewSo I'm wrapping up my trip here and if you want to save yourself a thousand bucks, just read my note and its as if you visited here for free. Shanghai has 30 million freakin people and surprisely traffic isn't that that crazy. Its pretty crazy but not 30 million crazy. Bicycles, scooters and cars dominate the roadways honking their horns. If you could have one penny for ever horn honk, you would be a trillionaire. You honk at everything, lane changes, I'm about to hit you, pedestrians on the road, etc. Traffic isn't that bad because the city is a port so ships deliver goods so you don't see the transport trucks like on the 401 and the subway has expanded from 2 lines to 8 lines in the couple of years. Its amusing that Toronto has worse traffic and its only 10% of Shanghai's size. Things people don't tell you about China, things aren't that cheap and its freakin cold ! Yes, its weird, but its frozen here. No wonder flights were only $700 coming here. Taking the subway and bus during rush hour is definitely something to try out just for the sake of it. People line up in the middle of the freaking road rather than the sideway to try to get on and then when the bus comes, its literally like a Backstreet Boys concert where screaming girls are pushing their way to the front. Hey, its only a bus. Chinese to English words on menu's and signs are always mis-spelled. Took some "glamour shot" photos here which lasted 14 hours in -30 weather. Glamour shots are like the what you see in shopping mall booths taking photos of you in shiny clothing and big hair. Its super popular here. Anyways, I don't recommend taking your glamour shots in a foreign country where no one speaks a word of english. In the editing room, they put "romantic words" on the albums but the translation is pretty bad ... some of them had spelled romantic spelled with a d instead of a t. Now that's romantic. There's one constant in the world, Starbucks is popular and its expensive everywhere. 2月14日 SHANGHAI Surprise - a Blog in ShanghaiRemember when I told you that cutting a steak in a shape of a heart was an ideal romantic gift for your loved one, well, apparently its huge in Shanghai. I guess they either read my facebook note last week or billions of people think like me. Anyways, I'm passing by this BBQ store and they have tons of BBQ meat cut in the shape of hearts. I can't believe it, the dam Chinese stole my facebook idea. I should of got it copyrighted and patented. On that note, KFC was wildly busy on Valentines Day as its apparently Shanghai's number one attraction along with Starbucks, Papa John's Pizza and BBQ meat skewers. The numbero uno Valentine's day gift here isn't chocolates but blue roses. Take note if you want to impress an asian lady. At lunch eateries, when you wait for a table, you basically stand in front of the table you want and watch them eat. It's hilarious. So basically at all busy restaurants, you have people standing in front of every table that's eating waiting for them to leave. I think this trend to start in Canada asap. 2月11日 Watch meSo I'm off to Shanghai tomorrow so sadly, my blog will be missing for the next couple of weeks. I will not be here to comfort you so make sure to wear warm clothes while I am gone.
I got my visa to China and the office was packed ... never go right after lunchtime to visa offices . Its the busiest time. I went right after it opened back up at lunch and thought I would beat the rush but no, I was like the hundreds of saps who thought the same way.
I went shopping along Bloor at some jewelry and watch stores and Mats Sundin bumped into me literally and said he was sorry. I look him and saw Mats with a girlfriend that resembled the Russian wife from Rocky 4. (but she was Swedish)
Royal de Versailles is the place to go for watches in Toronto and I asked them if they sold Patek Phillipe and they don't ! What the ! Currently there is no place in Toronto that sells Patek Phillipe ! I know, its must be the economy or something.
What's a Patek Phillipe? Patek Phillipe is basically the top luxurious watch out there but its quite sissy looking and more older generation grandpa styles. Its the conossieur's dress watch. My blog would never get one but my blog's mom wanted me to get one when I am in Asia this week and bring it back for her so I needed to know how much it costs. Surprisely, the internet is really really crappy for finding prices for this type of stuff.
![]() Ideas how to ruin Valentines Day:
Mention Rambo 4.
2月10日 Best Brunch in Toronto .....Where is the best brunch in Toronto?
Sierra Grill @ Bayview Village.
Best french toast - massive portions.
They also have a huge salad bar - think old school steakhouse sized salad bar which you can add to the brunch - its got every salad item - made your own, red potato salad, tuna macaroni, coleslaw, grilled eggplant, roasted peppers, breads, desserts and soups. The best salad bar I've seen in Toronto. (and quite contempary)
The place had good prices $8.99 to 10.99 for all brunch items and lunch items (sandwiches). Salad bar - all you can eat is an extra $4.49 or you can pay more and just have it as a meal.
Solid brunch place - I guess if you want a traditional brunch place that isn't franchisie, this place is worth a look.
The waitress thought I was on a date ? with my friend Josh - we ordered the same fruit smoothie, same banana french toast and salad bar.
Then we hit my Jacuzzi - me, Josh and a Jacuzzi on a snowy Sunday afternoon. 2月8日 Does having a Blog make you one of those people who re-tell stories ....So you know those people who tell the same stories over and over again ... well I am not really one of those people until I realized I might be ...
http://ernestchu.spaces.live.com/ tells about my trip to China next week
Me - telling someone about my trip to Shanghai next week and how cheap tickets were
Friend - oh I heard about it on http://ernestchu.spaces.live.com/
Me - oh, I am one of those people who re-tell the same stories over and over again Made in ChinaSo since I'm off to China, I went looking for some gifts. Eva wanted to get her dad a belt. Only stipulation was that it couldn't be Made in China because why would she get something that was homemade. Have you looked at any belts lately? Ever single one is "Made in China" : Calvin Klein ones, Tommy Hilfiger ones, Polo ones, Docker ones.. ... it was pretty funny and frustating sifting through all these belts at Winners and noticing ever single one was Made in China.
![]() 2月7日 Are you shovelling snow correctly? So its been snowing a few feet a day in Toronto and I have been shovelling snow and feeling like perhaps the weakest person in the Greater Toronto Area. Then I suddenly realized, I was shovelling snow left handed ! But I am right handed. Was this the reason why I was sluggish with my snow shovelling.
Shovelling snow lefthanded means holding the handle with your right hand and your left hand is on the handle which pushes or shovels the snow. I play sports left handed (hockey, golf) but eat and write right handed. Some would argue, I eat and write better than I play sports so maybe I should do everything righthanded. I tried shovelling snow for the first time right handed and physically it was easier but mentally tougher as I am used to shovelling left. It was as if I was super unco-ordinated shovelling right handed and snow was flying everywhere but I was less tired. ![]() Toronto changes mind about the ice rink increasesThe city has changed its mind about raises icerinks 21% as publc outrage and bad PR resulted .. pathetic, sure I don't like icerinks that cost $300 per hour but the city always backtrack on proposals when few in the minority get upset. Last year, they tried to close community centres on Sundays and then they changed their mind b/c some parents were complaining about leaving their kids on the street. If you make a decision, try to stick to it for at least a day or a week.
The city needs a 1% cut of the GST which is now 5%, more federal and prov funding or start a local income tax and or suburb commuting tax. Making small abritrary decisions to reduce office expenses by 10% or increase hockey rinks by 1000% will not work.. 2月6日 Having double conversations ....the last time I was in China, I was lost in Tiamenan Square and without a passport .. hopefully this trip goes much better.
I'm currently watching "the Moment of Truth" ... a lie detector test show where they ask provative questions and you win money by telling the truth. I don't fully get it since if you answer honestly to all of them, you get $500,000. Theoretically everyone should win.
Good news - my Jacuzzi is done ! I will give a full review once I get back from China.
Its going to be an interesting 2 weeks ... its sort of like like watching a marathon of non English movies and not understanding anything ... with any good luck, I will be able to catch the last 15 minutes of Borne Identity on the 14 hour flight to Shanghai. Please ! (although, I am not sure if I want to watch the first 2 hours to just see the last 15) Unlike domestic flights, international AC flights don't have on demand movies.
Oh, I just finished the Moment of Truth ... this dude didn't make it to even $20,000 but along the way said he has drove drunk, said ethnic jokes about his girlfriends family, changed the tip on credit cards receipts, etc ... all while getting applause from the audience for correctly answering the question.. 2月5日 Doesn't make senseSo I'm going to Shanghai next week, Surprise.. The ticket was $950 including taxes* for a 13 hour non-stop flight ! what the uck ! That's cheapa$$. That's $700 before taxes and surcharges !!!
How is this possible? I have no freakin idea ... I got the ticket exactly one week prior to departure and at one of these chinese tour companies.. I checked air canada website and the cheapest ticket I found was $1040 ($800 before tax) but that flight had to fly through Vancouver both ways.
I'm flying direct on Air Canada.
Insane ...
How are airline prices stagnant or lower than they were when we were kids when slurpee prices have risen exponentially?
Airplanes use oil to my knowledge.
When I was a kid, flights from Toronto to Calgary were $600 incl taxes and flights from Vancouver to Hong Kong were in the $1200 range. Its like airlines are anti-inflationary.
The City of Toronto annouced that services like hockey rink rentals are going up ... up to an insane $330/hour of ice in primetime ! That's like flying once to Shanghai and then back. (literally as the ticket was $350/trip plus taxes)
![]() My blog likes to think its a one in a million type blog ... but there are billions of blogs out there in China, does that mean there are thousands of blogs out there exactly like me?
will you be my Valentine ...You have see the propaganda for Valentines Day: flowers, spa vacations, chocolates, Wrestlemania tickets. What should you do on Valentines Day - exactly the opposite. uck flowers, uck the chocolate, uck the spa. Ever seen the episode of Seinfeld where George does the exact opposite reaction of his instinct reaction and it leads to miracles. Have you ever really been successful on Valentines Day from a emotional and fiscal standpoint? exactly ... so why not do the opposite and achieve instant results.
My Valentines suggestions:
- Blast a Justin Timberlake song and dance for your loved one in a polo dressshirt, no pants and some arygle checkered socks
- Point to the sky and tell her you named a star after her (then recite Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)
- Grill her a steak medium rare and cut it in a heart shape
- Buy one of those larger than life cakes at Costco with icing that reads "Will you Beeeeeee my Valentine"
- Order a singing telegram of your favorite hip hop song
- Get her a GT snowracer and tobagan down your favorite hill
- Re-enact the scene from Love Actaully http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m2T5yfgsZ0 Did you know what has happened to my 2nd hometown Yorkville? So I only sold my condo about 2 months ago and yet Yorkville has changed a hellavula lot since November 30th, the day its unofficial mayor left.
1. The Four Season's across from my former condo is being demolished... and yes for another condo development .. woohoo, I am glad I won't have to drive around that traffic jam. I think I would of lost it on the already punishing one way street I used to call home.
2. They already torn done the Harvey's ! First the one on the west side last year and now the one right on Yonge and Bloor ! Where are people going to eat for goodness sake. Paying $10 for a Hero Burger doesn't cut it.. putting McDonalds secret sauce on tomatoes and beef and calling yourself gourmet is weak..
3. Pizza Hut is demolished .. although I rarely inhibited there.
4. They already opened up a new store in my condo - Town shoes replaces La Senza .. I wouldn't have let a panties store get replaced by a shoe store on my condo watch. I would of veto'd this at the condo meetings.
it only took 2 months and the neighbourhood is already going to hell. Next thing you will know, they will tear down the only true historica site there - the Rail or the hotdog stands. Times flys by. Superbowl or Hannah Montana?Do you cheer for the Manning brothers or the dude who ditched Bridget Monaghan in the Superbowl?
![]() 2月3日 What's that show about middle aged cougars and dating in New York City called ....I'm really startin to feel like a middle aged men going to parties in Aurora filled with babies ... no, not the infamous bar Aurora in Banff but the small city north of Toronto filled with the new Wal-Marts that sell groceries. First time in Aurora. It was pretty close to my new place considering. Maybe a 25 minute drive. Not sure that says how far north I am but how central I am to all the suburbs.. I am strategically located within 30 minutes of everything: downtown, Aurora, Milton, Vaughn, Whitby..
Then again, everyone who lives in these places swear they are only 15 minutes from downtown.
Did you know Superbowl tickets are like the price of an german automobile.. seriously, they start at a couple thousand but some go for $50-75k per ticket. Crazy.. a reporter ask one of the players this week if he would pay to see the Superbowl at those prices and he responded "hell, I wouldn't even pay to see Tom and Giselle play for that"
Brilliant.
Questions ....
The number one questions people ask me is how is the wedding planning going? Do I look like J-Lo? I guess its like asking someone the weather.
