HOME sense

So its been a week in the house. Today is the first day where it is resembles a house. Marie came over and really tidy uped the place and now looks presentable.

First thing, Maria complained about the walk from the subway.

Dear Maria, its only 3 blocks away !

Maria was spoiled by my condo. Bay subway station and then take an elevator up. Plus she lives on the Bloor line too.

Pretty funny that she was complaining. This house is about as close to a subway station as you can get !

I have been Homesense alot this past week ... Homesense for you non suburbanan people is the Winners of home fashion... so you sift through a bunch of junk to find a treasure. Homesense is a pretty good bargain compared to other home decor stores and worth a look. They have some crazy stuff like knight armour that I can imagine ever selling.

Homesense = Winners
Pottery Barn = Banana Republic
Home Outfitters = Bay
Urban Barn = Club Monaco
Ethan Allen = Chanel
Pier One = wicker GAP
IKEA = H&M

I've been to IKEA alot since I live so close and the place is literally like Disneyland on weekends. Screaming kids, long line-ups, etc.

There cafeteria is very busy and I got a softdrink where you do it yourself at the self serve station... as put away my tray and thinkin about refilling my glass, I see a sign that says "refills only $1.00" .. what the uck, shouldn't it be free refills? there is a line all the time at the cash so if you want a refill, you have to go back to the LINE UP all over again ... sounds alittle unIKEAish in terms of ergonomics and senseability.

IKEA breakfast review - Loonie out of a Loonie

Its like Lego for adults but you pay hundreds of dollars to assembly stuff. Today I had the pleasure to assembly a bunch of bookcases, a corner desk and a kitchen table. Hip hip hurray.

It only cost me roughly a thousand bucks to do this. I felt like I was on Amazing Race doin' an event but was just in my living room.

First up, the easy "BILLY" bookcase, IKEA's standard product. If you can't assembly this, you need to go do a "Billy Madison" and go back to kindergarden. We got three BILLY's and the first time the instructions were missing (you don't need them anyways). Ease to assembly - 9 easies out of 10.

Time it takes - about 20 minutes for a large and 10 mins for a small. Large BILLYs are $69 Cdn (65 USD) for white or black ones but the same BILLY for a "wood" looking colour is $119 ! That's insane profit margins for the same product.

Lego project Two - the UTBY kitchen bar table - We assembled the legs first and for the price $195, the legs were a good quality stainless steel. This was relatively easy but then when we got to the top, I needed a screwdriver. uck me, so I started on the GALANT corner desk.

The GALANT corner desk is the desk you typically see when you go buy a VW automobile. Its a corner desk in an L shaped formation and comes in various configurations, hence its popularity. The GALANT is extremely expensive at a staggering $400 Cdn and upwards for a L shaped one.

So I start assemblying this stuff and then half way I realize I forget to buy the frame ! There is apparently a frame for the legs which you have to buy separately. I bought the legs separately but it still needed a "frame" in addition to the top. So I'm looking at the desk and think something is missing but there are no freakin instructions. Yes, the legs and the desktop just come sans instructions. I head directly to IKEA which luckily is easy only a block away. Yes, I live in the suburbs now and yes, it is only a block away.

So first thing I do, I go check out the GALANT desk in the showroom and look under it and voila, there is a steel frame underneath it. I missin that. Damit, I order it and then go home and install it. Ease to install 6.5 easies out of 10 but you need two people. The frame is very unIKEAlike.

IKEA breakfasts at $1 gets you scrambled eggs, 2 sausages, hashbrowns and a croissant (that's really just a piece of bread that look likes a croissant).

Next week is my first week of official suburban living. Wish me luck.

Spam - the Hawaiin treat

SPAM -

Did you know the canned ham called SPAM is a delicassie in Hawaii ? Yes its true...

I'm use Google to spell check nowadays.

Anyways, about SPAM...

So I went to this cheesy wedding show awhile ago. Basically, you pay $20 bucks PER PERSON to check out wedding stuff ... but what you really pay $20 PP is to be harassed with telephone calls and SPAM ... for some reason, there was a 3-4 week lag b/c after a certain "date" after the show, I was inidated with emails and calls from vendors requesting business - photographers, wedding planners, video guys, flowers, reception, card people. CRAZY. Yes, you have to pay for SPAM.

Website launch

So the website has been changed officially to www.evaandernest.com .... can u believe ernestandeva.com was taken. Outrageous !

I have updated and "Now and Then" section too.

My mom is on stage 99 of planning her wedding ... I mean planning our wedding . I wish she had some MTV reality tv show. Mrs. Chu, Wedding Mamas.

The videographer needs volunteers to interview during the wedding so if you want to be in the video, just let me know.

House work vs Condo work

The paint is done in the house and is drying as we speak . I might move in next week if I can get some movers.

I haven't moved in yet but house work seeems alot more than condo work. I guess thats why they call it housework.

Condo work involves creating small talk with the doorman, complaining with the old ladies in the building about the elevator malfunction and deciding what takeout restaurant I should partake in.

Housework is what the name suggests HOUSEWORK.

I consider myself knowledgeable in many things but I got so confused when drapes came about... so I brought in a drapery and window coverings company and they suggested I had a design problem b/c my place had a overhang which is not suited for drapes. What the uck. I emailed my only person I knew who know about drapes - TROY. He is a married dude who lives in the suburbs so he must know about drapes and quite frankly he knew EVERYTHING. Its quite amazing what moving to the suburbs and marriage can do for your brain.

Steelback Brewery - business lessons

So Frank D'Angelo - the guy who runs those cheesy commercials with D'Angelo apple juice, Cheetah energy drinks and Steelback beer is being ousted as CEO for a 24 year old preppy !

Steelback took over Molson for the Molson Indy and Molson Hockey Nite in Canada this year !

its called Steelback Indy and Steelback Hockey Nite in Canada .. this guy came from nowhere and seemed to be emerging and now gets replaced by the 24 year old son of the real "Steelback Brewery" financier Barry Sherman of Apotex pharmaceutical fame. Everyone thought Frank D'Angelo ran the show since he is in commercials and on tv but he was merely a puppet head and now with times not so great, he gets replaced by a twentysomething.

I'm going to miss Frank's commercials - Ben Johnson's "I cheat ah commercials" .

Entertainment equivalent - Angelina Jolie gets replaced by Murder She Wrote star Angela Lansbury in an action movie.

Dam Halloween kids ....

its only been a nite but I think I'm already going to turn into one of those grumpy old men in the suburbs....

So we handed out candy from 6 to 8:30 but then it really died down and the heat wasn't working (I couldn't find the pilot light) and it was cold so we shut down and we went out for dinner. We left the remainder of the candy on the porch, I know I know, its going to waste but it was cold and I was hungry ... all the trick and treaters were very young and no teenage punks. So I get back to close the lights and some punk ripped out one of the shrubs. What the ... I purposely gave out halloween candy to avoid this .... and it still HAPPENS b/c I left early ! I checked the other houses on the street and most actually had "closed down" for the nite with zero lights on.

Trends - I handed out chips, doritos an hickory sticks. The thing I noticed from the bags were chips are the new chocolate bars, no one hands out candy anymore. I thought I was being revolutionary but I guess i was wrong ...

and to the punk who ripped out the shrub and threw it on the driveway, I'm going to hunt you down.
